PA deputy speaker calls for flood protection embankment

BAHAWALPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th Apr, 2026) Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channar has called for the immediate construction of a protective embankment along the banks of the Sutlej River near Miani Qasim Shah, terming it a long-standing and legitimate demand of local residents.

He expressed these views while addressing a large public gathering in Miani Qasim Shah, which was also attended by Provincial Minister for Irrigation Mian Kazim Ali Pirzada.

The deputy speaker stated that the area is severely affected by annual flooding of the Sutlej River, with riverbank erosion causing significant hardships for local communities. He emphasized that urgent attention is required to address the issue and safeguard lives, property, and agricultural land.

Highlighting his role as a public representative, Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channar said he fully understands the challenges faced by residents.

He urged the Irrigation Minister to conduct an immediate survey of the area and ensure the construction of a durable embankment to mitigate future flood damage. He also thanked local elders and organizers for arranging the gathering and assured full support in resolving the issue.

Addressing the gathering, Provincial Minister Mian Kazim Ali Pirzada acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and assured that necessary instructions would be issued to the relevant authorities for immediate measures to tackle flood risks in the area.

Earlier, the residents warmly welcomed the visiting leaders, showering them with flower petals and escorting them to the venue. Community members presented their concerns and demands before the dignitaries. Residents expressed gratitude to both leaders for visiting the area and for their assurances regarding a solution to the longstanding problem.
