LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 31st May, 2026) Coordinator to the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) Saif Ur Rehman on Sunday said the ongoing conflict in the middle East has created a significant opportunity for Pakistan’s ports and logistics sector, which could translate into substantial economic gains if supported by timely reforms and effective governance.

Talking to a delegation of students from Murasaki Japanese Language Centre, led by its Chief Executive Officer Usman Akhtar, he said the surge in port traffic resulting from shifting trade routes and increased regional demand could provide a major boost to the national economy. He added that Pakistan has a rare opportunity to transform itself into a regional trade and transit hub.

Saif Ur Rehman said policymakers should fast-track reforms and ensure efficient governance to capitalize on rising maritime activity. Such measures, he noted, could help generate employment opportunities, increase government revenues and strengthen the country’s economic resilience in the years ahead.

He emphasized that Pakistan’s strategic geographic location places it in a favourable position to benefit from growing maritime trade. However, he cautioned that realizing these gains would require urgent reforms aimed at improving port efficiency, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and enhancing transparency in cargo handling and customs procedures.

The FTO coordinator said modernizing infrastructure, adopting digital technologies and streamlining regulatory frameworks would help attract international shipping companies and investors. He added that efficient logistics networks are essential for reducing trade costs and improving the competitiveness of Pakistani exports in global markets.

He stressed that sustained policy support and institutional improvements would be critical for enabling Pakistan to fully benefit from changing regional trade dynamics and emerging opportunities in the global shipping and logistics sector.
