Pakistan, China reaffirm commitment to deepening strategic partnership

Both sides have also expressed resolve to expand CPEC amid celebrations of 75th diplomatic relations

BEIJING: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 26th, 2026) Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their resolve to further strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership, expand high-level exchanges, and deepen political mutual trust while ensuring that bilateral relations continue to progress in a stable and coordinated direction.

The understanding was reflected in a joint statement issued following the official visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to China, held in connection with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During the four-day visit, the Prime Minister attended commemorative events marking the milestone and held meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and agreed on a broad consensus to further advance the China-Pakistan All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

The two countries described their decades-long friendship as a valuable strategic asset, noting that relations have remained stable and resilient despite shifting regional and global circumstances. They reiterated that Pakistan and China have consistently supported each other on matters of core interest and shared development goals.

Both sides agreed to accelerate efforts to build an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future, with enhanced cooperation in political, economic, defence, and security fields, along with continued coordination on regional and global issues.

Pakistan expressed strong support for China’s global initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative.

The joint statement also highlighted recent high-level exchanges, including visits by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, as well as continued engagement through diplomatic and political forums between the two countries.

Both sides reaffirmed support for each other on core national issues. Pakistan reiterated its adherence to the one-China policy and described Taiwan as an inalienable part of China, while opposing any form of “Taiwan independence.

China, in turn, reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and development.

The two countries agreed to further advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and accelerate the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), including progress on Phase-II development, industrial cooperation, energy, infrastructure, and connectivity projects. Key projects discussed included the Karakoram Highway realignment and enhanced utilisation of Gwadar Port as a regional trade hub.

Both sides also emphasised expanding cooperation in agriculture, mining, information technology, artificial intelligence, education, and space technology. China reiterated its support for training programmes for Pakistani professionals and increased agricultural cooperation, including improved access for Pakistani agricultural exports.

Security cooperation was also a key focus, with both countries agreeing to strengthen counter-terrorism collaboration and ensure the safety of Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan. China reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s efforts to maintain internal security and stability.

On regional and global issues, the two sides called for adherence to multilateralism, respect for international law, and support for a UN-centred global order. They also reiterated the importance of peaceful resolution of disputes and opposed unilateral actions that could undermine regional stability.

Pakistan briefed China on developments in Jammu and Kashmir, while China reiterated that the dispute should be resolved peacefully in accordance with UN resolutions and relevant agreements.

Both countries also exchanged views on Afghanistan, middle East stability, and broader regional security, agreeing to maintain close coordination in multilateral forums, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked the Chinese leadership and people for their hospitality during the visit and for the commemorative events marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China.
