UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th May, 2026) With the international community confronted with multiple and interconnected crises, Pakistan has underscored the need for renewed solidarity and a more effective system of global governance anchored in the UN Charter.
"Peaceful settlement of disputes should be the norm, and longstanding issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy," Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, told a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance, organized by China at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang YI preside over Thursday's meeting of Group, which comprises 57 countries. It was formed in December last year as a platform to mobilize joint efforts to improve the global governance system.
The group focuses on safeguarding the UN Charter, promoting multilateralism, and increasing the representation of Global South countries. It is based on five core tenets proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping: sovereign equality, the international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and taking tangible action.
Noting the eroding faith in collective action, with unilateralism and the selective application of international law undermining global stability, DPM/FM Dar said, "In this uncertain environment, the world urgently needs renewed solidarity and a more effective system of global governance anchored in the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter."
For Pakistan, he said, multilateralism was not an abstract aspiration but a principled commitment rooted in cooperation and collective responsibility, citing Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah pledge that “Pakistan will never be found lacking in upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.”
"Today, that commitment remains unwavering," DPM/FM Dar said.
Pakistan and China, he said, stand united in support of just and inclusive global governance architecture, anchored in international law, with the United Nations at its core, and guided by the strategic vision of their leadership and people's aspirations that has grown from strength to strength through decades of mutual trust and respect, bilateral support and commonality of views on major world issues.
"As iron brothers and all-weather strategic cooperative partners, our two countries have consistently worked together for peace, development, and the legitimate aspirations of the developing world."
Pakistan, he said, "deeply values" China’s role as a stabilizing force in international affairs and appreciates its consistent support for the sovereignty, development, and prosperity of developing nations.
DPM/FM Dar said President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative represents a timely, pointing out that it is anchored in the five core principles of sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and real actions, the Initiative resonates directly with the aspirations of the international community for a fairer and more representative global order.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>"Importantly, the Initiative seeks to reform and improve, not replace the existing international system. It reinforces the centrality of the United Nations while advocating greater representation and voice for the Global South in global decision-making processes."
Pakistan, he said, fully supports this Initiative, citing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who described it as a historic step toward strengthening the multilateral system to better address the contemporary challenges of peace and development facing humanity.
The Global Governance Initiative also complements President Xi’s other important global public goods, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, DPM/FM pointed out. "Together, these initiatives provide an articulate vision for promoting sustainable development, collective security, inter-civilization harmony, and equitable governance."
In this regard, DPM/FM Dar said Pakistan seeks a just, equitable and inclusive world order, and global governance reform must prioritize the concerns and aspirations of developing countries.
"We need a more democratic international financial architecture, greater climate justice, fairer trade and development systems, and inclusive governance frameworks for emerging technologies."
International law must be applied uniformly and without double standards, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected.
Cooperation rather than confrontation should be the default setting in international relations, DPM/FM added.
"Each state must ensure the faithful implementation of international treaties, and people living under foreign occupation must be enabled to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions."
Despite its imperfections, he said the United Nations remains humanity’s most indispensable institution for advancing peace, development, and human dignity. "As the organization marks its 80th anniversary, we must collectively ensure that it is strengthened and equipped to respond effectively to the realities of the 21st century."
The UN Security Council, he said must become more democratic, representative, and accountable, with the small and medium States fully and adequately represented on the 15-member body.
"Adding new permanent members would violate the fundamental principle of sovereign equality and make the Council even less representative."
In conclusion, DPM/FM Dar remarked, "China can always count on Pakistan’s steadfast support for the vision of building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind."
DPM/FM Dar Thursday concluded his 3-day visit to New York and headed to Washington where he is set to meet US Secretary Of State Marko Rubio on Friday.
