ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Apr, 2026) Pakistan has emerged as a pivotal mediator in the Iran-U.S. conflict, brokering a two-week ceasefire and launching the Islamabad Peace Process to prevent regional escalation into a broader war.
Tensions ignited in late February 2026 with U.S.-Israeli airstrikes killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and top leadership, prompting Tehran’s retaliation. The cycle shut the Strait of Hormuz, spiked global energy prices, and raised World War III fears, Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF) Executive Director Khalid Taimur Akram said his research article.
Pakistan, leveraging its neutral stance and trust from both sides, hosted historic Islamabad Talks on April 11-12— the first face-to-face Iran-U.S. dialogue since 1979. Under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Gen. Muhammad Asim Munir, backchannel diplomacy secured the ceasefire and facilitated 21 hours of intense negotiations on war cessation, Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, energy routes, and de-escalation.
Though no final agreement emerged, the talks marked a diplomatic milestone. Pakistan’s unique position, sharing a 909 km border with Iran, as the sole Muslim nuclear power, a U.
S. non-NATO ally, and friend to Gulf states and China—enabled its role. Past successes include facilitating 1979 China-U.S. ties, 1988 Geneva Accords, and 2020 Doha Agreement.
Ongoing efforts include PM Sharif’s four-day tour: Jeddah (April 15, meeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman), Doha (April 16, with Emir Sheikh Tamim), and upcoming Antalya, Türkiye. Concurrently, Gen. Munir is in Tehran engaging Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar hailed the process as “active neutrality in action,” engaging Washington, Tehran, Beijing, and regional capitals. A second phase of talks is eyed for April 20-26, with both sides expressing interest.
“Pakistan chose dialogue over confrontation, offering a platform when military options loomed,” Sharif said. Global leaders have praised Islamabad’s initiative, cementing its status as an emerging peace broker.
Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF) Executive Director Khalid Taimur Akram called it “a defining moment in diplomatic history,” slowing escalation and fostering hope for permanent peace.
