KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Apr, 2026) Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani on Saturday said that the government’s effective economic policies helped minimise public burden during the recent conflict in the middle East, while diplomatic efforts by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led to a ceasefire, which brings an improvement in the situation.

Addressing a press conference at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) after a meeting with business leaders, Kayani termed it a matter of pride that Pakistan played a pivotal diplomatic role in achieving a ceasefire in the Middle East, noting that the conflict had adversely impacted economies worldwide, including Pakistan.

Kayani said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Federal government had achieved key economic targets, enabling it to cushion the impact of the war. He added that the government prevented an increase in petroleum prices for three weeks and reduced expenditures, utilising Rs129 billion to shield the public from additional financial burden.

He emphasised that the business community plays a vital role in strengthening the national economy, particularly exporters, whom the PM described as “the crown jewel” due to their contribution to foreign exchange reserves and economic stability.

The minister also highlighted the role of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the economy through remittances, adding that the government had facilitated investment through the Roshan Digital Account initiative.

He noted that a major company had recently opened an account under the scheme and was bringing investment into Pakistan, reflecting confidence in government policies.

Kayani credited the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) for playing a significant role in stabilising the economy. Referring again to the Middle East conflict, he said it had affected global economies, but Pakistan’s efforts toward a ceasefire were widely appreciated by world leaders.

He added that the ceasefire led to a decline in global oil prices, allowing the government to reduce petrol and diesel prices and provide relief to the public. He expressed hope that continued efforts would lead to a permanent end to the conflict, further improving the situation.

Responding to questions, Kayani said the government would work closely with the business community to strengthen the economy. On tax matters, he stressed that action against tax evasion was necessary but would be carried out on merit and with balance.

He further noted that while economic conditions were challenging in 2024, strict measures had reduced inflation from 24 percent to single digit, which helped limit the war’s impact on the public. He reiterated the need to boost exports and increase remittances from overseas Pakistanis.

The office bearers of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and other members of the business community were also present on the occasion.
