Sardar Masood Khan has described Pakistan’s facilitation of direct talks between Washington and Tehran as a landmark diplomatic achievement, calling it a “historic milestone” while cautioning that the process remains ongoing with promising prospects for further engagement
MIRPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Apr, 2026) Sardar Masood Khan has described Pakistan’s facilitation of direct talks between Washington and Tehran as a landmark diplomatic achievement, calling it a “historic milestone” while cautioning that the process remains ongoing with promising prospects for further engagement.
Reflecting on the inaugural round of negotiations held in Islamabad on Thursday, the former ambassador to the United States, China, and the United Nations said Pakistan had succeeded where many global powers had faltered—bringing two long-standing adversaries to the negotiating table on complex and sensitive issues. He noted that the talks were preceded by a temporary ceasefire, which helped create a conducive environment for dialogue, enabling both sides to identify areas of convergence despite the absence of a formal agreement.
Khan highlighted that the discussions were conducted in a constructive atmosphere marked by mutual respect and a willingness to engage. He termed this shift in tone a significant achievement, adding that both delegations returned with a clearer understanding of each other’s positions and renewed confidence in the diplomatic process.
Looking ahead, he expressed cautious optimism, stating that the momentum generated in Islamabad remains intact. Despite recent tensions, including a limited naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz, he observed that the ceasefire largely holds and no direct military confrontation has occurred, indicating that a second round of talks is likely.
The former diplomat identified the nuclear framework and governance of the Strait of Hormuz as key areas where compromise may be possible, while acknowledging that contentious issues such as ballistic missile limitations and regional alignments continue to pose serious challenges.
He added that Iranian demands, including reparations and broader ceasefire arrangements, further complicate negotiations.
Khan also pointed to the wider geopolitical landscape, including ongoing tensions in Lebanon and differing priorities among global and regional actors. He noted that while Washington balances global economic responsibilities, regional dynamics continue to influence the pace and scope of diplomatic progress.
Commenting on the blockade, he described it as a form of coercive diplomacy intended to pressure Iran, though not fully enforced. He warned that any escalation could have severe global economic repercussions, potentially triggering recessionary pressures and instability, particularly in developing nations.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s role, Khan said Islamabad remains actively engaged in quiet and back-channel diplomacy, maintaining consultations with key regional stakeholders such as Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Qatar. He emphasized that growing international confidence has positioned Pakistan as a credible and effective mediator.
Concluding, he said Pakistan’s diplomatic initiative has opened a viable pathway toward peace, expressing confidence that sustained engagement, strategic patience, and responsible leadership can translate the current momentum into a lasting resolution.
