Pakistani team conquers 5,050m Phaghram Pass-Golin trek

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Jul, 2026) A team of Pakistani male and female trekkers has successfully completed the 5,050-metre Phaghram Pass-Golin trek in Chitral for the first time under an initiative of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government aimed at promoting adventure tourism in the province.

According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA), the expedition was organized on the directives of Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Tourism and Culture Malik Adeel Iqbal.

The team traversed the challenging Phaghram Pass, linking Laspur Valley in Upper Chitral with Golin Valley in Lower Chitral, becoming the first Pakistani expedition, including women, to successfully complete the historic route.

KPCTA said the achievement reflects the government's vision of rediscovering remote mountain trails and promoting them as safe, sustainable and responsible adventure tourism destinations.

The Phaghram Pass, located in the Hindukush mountain range, is regarded as one of Pakistan's least explored and most demanding high-altitude routes, featuring glaciers, steep snow-covered slopes, unstable rocky terrain and avalanche-prone sections.

During the expedition, the team climbed nearly 1,000 metres from the base camp to the summit before descending about 1,100 metres through difficult terrain. The trekkers also rediscovered a memorial plaque dedicated to Austrian mountaineer Georg Kronberger, who lost his life in the area on July 31, 1975, highlighting the historical significance of the route.

The expedition included Kamran Khan, the first to reach the summit, Mehrosh Akhtar, Samar Khan, Nauman Khan, Noorul Rahman, Zohaib Khan, Umar Khattab Shirani, Sonia Babar, Amina Shabbir and Madiha Syed.

KPCTA said sisters Mehrosh Akhtar, Sameel Roz and Madhushala Akhtar, all from Chitral, also became the first three sisters from the district to summit Phaghram Pass, marking a significant milestone for women's participation in adventure tourism and mountaineering.
