LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Jun, 2026) Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML) President Khalid Masood Sandhu has termed India’s proposed tunnel project on the Chenab River a clear example of water aggression and urged the government to adopt a firm stance to safeguard Pakistan’s water rights.

In a statement on Thursday, Khalid Masood Sandhu said India continues to pursue policies that undermine regional agreements and international norms. He said that after suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, the Indian government has now moved forward with another controversial project on the Chenab River.

He said the Indian Ministry of Environment has approved the 260-megawatt Dulhasti Stage-II run-of-the-river hydropower project in Kishtwar district, valued at more than Rs327.7 billion in Indian Currency. According to the approved plan, the project includes the construction of a separate diversion tunnel and a new water reservoir.

Sandhu said that attempts to control the flow of rivers destined for Pakistan amount to water aggression and pose a serious threat to the country’s water security.

He claimed that India has repeatedly used upstream control of water resources in a manner that adversely affects Pakistan, either by restricting water flows or releasing water in excessive quantities.

He said water is a vital national resource and Pakistan must take effective measures to protect its water interests. He called on the government to formulate a clear strategy and actively raise the issue at international forums.

The PMML president emphasized that Pakistan should present its concerns before the global community and seek the implementation of international agreements governing shared water resources. He added that protecting the country’s water rights is essential for agriculture, food security and economic stability.

Khalid Masood Sandhu said that PMML would continue to raise awareness on the issue and support all efforts aimed at protecting Pakistan’s water resources and national interests.
