Provinces expand recycling, waste management, pollution control measures

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 11th Jun, 2026) Provincial governments intensified efforts to improve waste management, recycling and environmental compliance during FY2026, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26.

Punjab expanded environmental enforcement through more than 150,000 inspections of industries and brick kilns, resulting in demolitions, sealing operations, registration of cases and fines exceeding Rs687 million.

The province also introduced water recycling and reuse systems in commercial operations and strengthened monitoring of industrial activities through digital mapping, artificial intelligence-based monitoring and surveillance systems.

In Sindh, authorities approved 18 hazardous waste incineration plants aimed at reducing waste volumes, destroying hazardous materials and lowering methane emissions from landfills.

The survey stated that the Jam Chakro Landfill Site is being upgraded into a modern engineered sanitary landfill with plans for utilizing recovered landfill gas for power generation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Sindh also shut down more than 20 tyre pyrolysis plants due to environmental concerns and enforced action against illegal battery recycling facilities.

In Balochistan, authorities confiscated approximately 158,293 kilograms of illegal plastic shopping bags under the Plastic Shopping and Flat Bags Act, 2023.

The province also incinerated 195,980 kilograms of infectious hospital waste during July-March FY2026 through strengthened enforcement of hospital waste management regulations.

According to the survey, these initiatives reflect growing provincial efforts to improve waste management systems, reduce pollution and promote environmentally sustainable practices across the country.
