LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Apr, 2026) On the instructions of Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique, the Punjab Health Department has written a letter to the Secretary Communication and Works (C&W) Department, seeking a comprehensive review of the structural strength of the OPD block basement at Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi, along with corrective measures to address persistent waterlogging.
According to official correspondence on Friday, the request follows concerns regarding water accumulation in the basement of the OPD block, a structure dating back to the 1950s. A detailed report submitted by the Executive Engineer, Buildings Division No. 2, Rawalpindi on April 23, 2026, identified that the water seepage is likely due to a high groundwater table, with moisture entering through brick walls and the basement floor.
The report noted that the issue has persisted for decades, necessitating continuous water pumping arrangements. While no major structural cracks were observed during the inspection, officials emphasized that the age of the building and prolonged exposure to moisture require a thorough technical evaluation.
The Health Department has stressed that, given the public safety concerns associated with a major teaching hospital, a comprehensive structural assessment of the OPD block, including its basement, is essential. The C&W Department has been asked to submit a detailed report at the earliest, including cost estimates and an implementation plan for necessary remedial measures.
The letter further directed that the matter be treated on a priority basis due to the potential risks posed to patients, staff, and hospital infrastructure.
