Punjab plans fuel rationing, school holidays' extension amid energy crisis

Proposals include extending holidays in educational institutions until April 15 and introducing a hybrid mode of education to ensure academic continuity

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-March 24th, 2026) The Punjab government is planning to implement measures including fuel rationing, extension in the school holidays to manage the energy crisis amid Iran-US tensions in the middle East, the sources said.

The proposals included extending holidays in educational institutions until April 15 and introducing a hybrid mode of education to ensure academic continuity.

Punjab Energy Department has forwarded recommendations to the provincial authorities, proposing the introduction of a fuel rationing system on the pattern of Federal arrangements.

The sources said a coupon-based or digital system has been suggested to ensure equitable distribution of petrol and diesel, along with limiting fuel supply to selected vehicles on designated days.

The recommendations also include strict work-from-home guidelines for private sector offices and a ban on non-essential events.

The authorities, besides it, were advised to expand metro and bus services to facilitate the commuters. The measures such as shutting down LED billboards and decorative lighting, operating streetlights in alternate mode after 10pm, and further restricting market operating hours have also been proposed to conserve energy.
