Qatar’s former emir ‘Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’ dies at 74

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that Sheikh Hamad helped strengthen relations between Pakistan and Qatar.

DOHA: Qatar’s former emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at the age of 74, the country’s Amiri Diwan announced on Sunday.

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before handing power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who remains the country’s emir.

During his leadership, Sheikh Hamad played a major role in expanding Qatar’s global influence. His era saw the growth of Al Jazeera television network and Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Under his rule, Qatar also strengthened its position as a major exporter of liquefied natural gas and increased its role in regional diplomacy and international affairs.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over Sheikh Hamad’s death, calling him a visionary leader who helped transform Qatar into a modern and globally respected nation.

Sharif said the former emir’s contributions to Qatar’s development, regional peace and international cooperation would be remembered for generations. He also extended condolences to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also expressed condolences, saying Sheikh Hamad made important contributions to Qatar progress and helped strengthen relations between Pakistan and Qatar.
