RAWALPINDI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Jun, 2026) The Raja Bazaar Beautification Project, aimed at modernising Rawalpindi's historic commercial centre, is nearing completion and is expected to be inaugurated on June 30.

Municipal Officer (Infrastructure) of the Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi (MCR), Rafaqat Hayat Gondal, told APP that most of the development and renovation work had been completed, while the remaining finishing work was progressing according to schedule.

He said the project site was handed over to the MCR in March after the completion of utility-related works by the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Sui Gas authorities, and telephone and internet service providers.

Gondal said the project, which converted the section of Hamilton Road from Fawara Chowk to Dangi Khoi into a modern pedestrian walkway, cost approximately Rs 450 million.

Of the total cost, around Rs 170 million was spent by IESCO on shifting electricity infrastructure underground, Rs 50 million by WASA on relocating water supply lines, while the MCR utilised Rs 240 million for beautification works and the construction of roads, footpaths and drainage infrastructure.

He said electricity, telephone and internet cables had been moved underground, new water supply and sewerage lines installed, and old lamp posts replaced. Separate washrooms for men and women had also been constructed, benches installed, and historic buildings in the market renovated.

The municipal officer said shop signboards had been redesigned in a uniform style to improve the area's visual appearance.

Gondal said modern pedestrian facilities, flower beds, trees and decorative features had been added along the route from Fawara Chowk to Hamilton Road, significantly enhancing the overall outlook of the market.

He said the project had helped resolve longstanding issues, including encroachments, overhead utility wires and the deteriorating condition of the market, providing shoppers and visitors with a safer and more pleasant environment.

Gondal said the remaining finishing work was underway and expressed hope that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe and formally inaugurated on June 30.
