CHINIOT, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Jul, 2026) The flow of water in the Chenab River continued to rise on Thursday, prompting authorities to maintain a high alert as floodwaters spread across low-lying areas of Chiniot district. According to the Irrigation Department, water discharge at Chiniot Bridge increased from 177,782 cusecs at 10 a.m. to a higher level by 1 p.m., with further inflows from upstream expected in the coming hours.

Officials said significant water discharge was also being recorded at the Qadirabad, Khanki and Marala barrages. Floodwaters have inundated parts of Chhin Mehar Shah, Burj Ali, Chak Sarkar, Thatta Mahmood, Sahmal, Mianwal and other low-lying areas, submerging agricultural land at several locations and raising concerns over riverbank erosion.

Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, the Health Department, the Irrigation Department and other relief agencies have been placed on high alert, with relief operations continuing in affected areas. Authorities said rescue equipment, machinery and personnel have been kept on standby to carry out evacuation and emergency response operations if the situation worsens.

The district administration said the river situation is being monitored continuously and all relevant departments have been directed to remain vigilant in view of the expected increase in water flow. Residents have been advised to stay away from the river, avoid crossing floodwaters or making unnecessary journeys, and immediately report any emergency to the relevant authorities.
