LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Mar, 2026) Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique has announced that a state-of-the-art Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology is being constructed in Gujranwala at a cost of Rs 16 billion to provide advanced heart care facilities to the region.
He shared these details while chairing a meeting on Thursday to review the establishment and administrative affairs of the institute. During the meeting, it was also decided to upgrade the emergency department of Children’s Hospital Gujranwala, while various proposals to improve healthcare facilities in the city were discussed in detail.
The meeting emphasized the need for effective administrative supervision in hospitals and reaffirmed the commitment to providing quality medical services to the public. Participants agreed to accelerate healthcare reforms in line with Punjab government policies and to ensure better public service through coordinated efforts among all institutions.
Khawaja Salman Rafique stated that the new cardiology institute would offer the best possible cardiac treatment to millions of people in the Gujranwala division. He said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is committed to ensuring top-quality cardiac facilities for the public. He added that efforts are also underway to improve the Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology.
The minister termed the project a milestone in delivering modern and quality treatment for heart diseases and said the Punjab government, under the leadership of the chief minister, is taking revolutionary steps in the health sector.
He reiterated that providing modern medical facilities at the doorstep of the people remains a top priority.
Secretary Specialized Health Azmat Mahmood Khan briefed the meeting on the project’s progress, available resources and future targets. He said the institute would be equipped with modern medical technology, staffed with expert doctors and designed to offer patient-friendly services. He stressed that institutional cooperation is essential to make the healthcare system more effective and that the new institute would serve as a model of such collaboration.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants reaffirmed their commitment to developing the Maryam Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology on modern lines, ensuring that residents of Gujranwala and nearby areas would no longer need to travel to major cities for heart treatment.
Among those who attended the meeting were Members of the National Assembly Mahmood Bashir Virk and Shahid Usman Ibrahim, Members of the Provincial Assembly Muhammad Nawaz Chohan and Imran Khalid Butt, former MPAs Muhammad Tawfiq Butt and Moazzam Rauf Mughal, along with senior health officials and administrators.
