MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Apr, 2026) Director Central Cotton Research Institute Ms.Sabahat Hussain has urged farmers to adopt scientific methods for higher cotton yield.
She said modern practices improve crop growth and ensure better production.
Farmers were advised to prepare land using laser levelers to save water and fertilizers, while chisel ploughing was recommended for hard soils to improve root growth.
For weed control, she suggested using Pendimethalin or S-metolachlor within 24 hours of sowing.
She emphasized the use of certified and triple gene cotton varieties for better resistance and yield.
According to recommendations, seed rate varies with germination.Ridge sowing requires 4.5 to 6 kg seed per acre while drill sowing needs 9 to 12 kg.Farmers should keep 10% extra seed as reserve.
Seed treatment with Imidacloprid and Tebuconazole was termed essential for protection against pests during early growth.
She further advised sowing in north south rows with 9-inch plant spacing to reduce wind damage.
Farmers were also cautioned to follow weather conditions and avoid sowing in fields with okra or eggplant to prevent disease spread.
