Senate continues debate on budget 2026-27

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Jun, 2026) The Senate on Tuesday continued its debate on the Federal budget 2026-27, with senators from both treasury and opposition benches presenting a range of proposals aimed at improving the finance bill and ensuring public welfare.

Participating in the debate, Senator Zameer Hussain Ghumro said the budget should include additional incentives for the welfare and well-being of the people.

He stressed the need to give more powers to the provinces in line with the spirit of the 18th Constitutional Amendment, saying that a stronger federation depends on stronger provinces.

He emphasized the importance of economic stability and urged to take effective measures to control inflation and provide relief to the public.

Senator Ali Zafar highlighted Pakistan’s important role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States, saying the country's efforts deserve appreciation as they helped avert the risk of a dangerous conflict in the region.

Commenting on the budget, he said its benefits must reach ordinary citizens through meaningful “trickle-down effects.”

He called for the launch of long-term development initiatives and the adoption of sustainable economic policies.

Senator Ali Zafar said that a comprehensive strategy was required to strengthen the national economy and create employment opportunities for the youth.

He urged the government to focus on the information technology sector and formulate an effective policy to address the issue of circular debt.

He noted that no significant allocation had been made in the budget for the construction of new dams despite the country's growing water challenges. He called for greater attention to water management and infrastructure development.

The senator stressed the need for a population management policy and increased allocations for the education sector to secure the country's future and promote sustainable development.
