K-Electric enters a new era as Shehryar Chishti officially becomes Chairman of the Board. While the utility solidifies its leadership structure, the hunt for a permanent CEO continues. These administrative changes follow a turbulent start to 2026, marking a significant pivot in Karachi’s power sector management and ownership.
The long-standing leadership transition at K-Electric (KE) reached a milestone today. During a high-stakes board meeting, directors officially appointed Shehryar Chishti as the K-Electric Chairman. This move stabilizes the board after months of interim arrangements.
The meeting however ended without finally deciding on a Chief Executive Officer. Board is still vetting candidates to replace the previous CEO Monis Alvi. This leadership deficit has been a priority to the Karachi single power supplier with summer in full swing.
The management of K-Electric changed radically since the beginning of 2026. The first quarter was characterized by two large exits. To begin with, Monis Alvi, the CEO, resigned after internal changes. Soon the foreign Chairman of the board resigned as well. Such exits created an opening to the localized approach to leadership.
The company had two new brothers, Sameer Chishti and Shehryar Chishti, join the board in April. Their election brought about a concentration of power by the AsiaPak Investments. The board has indicated that it favors local stakeholders, who are familiar with Pakistan complex energy market, by appointing Shehryar Chishti to the position of K-Electric Chairman.
The utility is currently dual track centred. Even though the new Chairman of K-Electric is in charge of policy and strategic investment, there is an interim management team that manages day to day operations. The board will need to have a permanent CEO in the near future to seal the multi-billion rupee investment plan in the utility.
According to insiders, high-profile energy experts are part of those sought after to become permanent head. It is aimed to discover a leader that will be able to balance both consumer needs and regulation demands. In the meantime, the company continues to be under the leadership of Shehryar Chishti as the company passes through this transition.
