ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Apr, 2026) Vice President of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman Friday said Pakistan’s demand for the immediate implementation of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) through the United Nations was an important development for regional peace.

In a statement, she said Pakistan’s firm diplomatic stance over India’s alleged suspension of the water accord was drawing international attention, adding that respect for international agreements was essential for regional stability and lasting peace.

She said Pakistan had made it clear that unilateral actions regarding shared water resources could not be accepted, stressing that adherence to treaties was necessary to prevent tensions in South Asia.

Sherry Rehman said that Pakistan’s position on the treaty was legally and morally strong, saying that the Court of Arbitration had already ruled that India could not unilaterally suspend the agreement.

She said Pakistan had consistently maintained that all disputes could only be resolved through meaningful diplomatic dialogue and constructive engagement.

Highlighting the growing risks of water-related disputes in the region, she said the role of international institutions had become even more important to avert possible escalation.

Sherry Rehman said Pakistan had always advocated peace and played a mediatory role in global conflicts, adding that its diplomatic efforts during tensions involving United States and Iran had also been appreciated.

Criticizing the Indian leadership, she alleged that the government of Narendra Modi was using irresponsible tactics to divert attention from domestic failures and public pressure.
