LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Apr, 2026) Six flagship health initiatives launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif have achieved significant success, providing healthcare services to millions of people across Punjab.
According to an official handout issued on Saturday, key initiatives including field hospitals, Clinics on Wheels, free home delivery of medicines, revamped health centres, community health inspectors, and the stroke management programme are actively serving the public. More than 21 million patients have benefited from field hospitals and Clinics on Wheels, while over 30,000 patients suffering from diabetes, hepatitis, and tuberculosis have received free medicines at their doorstep.
The report stated that 1,217 health centres have been revamped so far, while work on 895 additional centres is underway under Phase III. Community health inspectors have registered over 63 million individuals across the province, strengthening healthcare outreach.
Cardiac catheterisation facilities have been made operational in four district hospitals, where 1,628 procedures have been successfully performed in Jhelum, Jhang, Mianwali, and Vehari. Additionally, 251 surveillance assistants are digitally monitoring hospitals and health centres across districts and tehsils.
A detailed briefing on the restructuring of the Health and Population Department was presented during a special meeting chaired by the chief minister. Secretary Health and Population Nadia Saqib informed participants about the progress of ongoing projects. The chief minister expressed satisfaction over the performance and appreciated the efforts of the department.
During the meeting, directives were issued to establish stroke management centres in district hospitals and to increase the number of nursing seats in public sector hospitals.
The briefing highlighted that Clinics on Wheels have treated 18.2 million patients, conducted 7 million ultrasounds, and administered vaccinations to 1.2 million children. Field hospitals have treated 2.8 million patients, carried out 448,468 laboratory tests, and performed 170,772 X-rays and ultrasounds.
Under the home delivery programme, 2,242 diabetes patients are receiving insulin for two months at a time, while 14,286 hepatitis patients and 13,864 tuberculosis patients are also being provided medicines at home.
In Phase I, 1,026 Basic Health Units and 191 Rural Health Centres were upgraded into modern facilities, while Phase II saw the revamping of 433 BHUs and 81 RHCs. Work on 895 centres is currently ongoing under Phase III.
Community health inspectors have collected data from 8 million households and 10 million homes, while the GIS team has mapped 58,571 areas across Punjab.
In the four district hospitals, 1,055 angiographies, 559 angioplasties, 12 Primary PCIs, and two temporary pacemakers have been performed so far.
Officials further informed that treatment is being initiated within an average of five minutes of a patient’s arrival at hospitals.
The chief minister reiterated that the revamping of all health centres must be completed within the current year and emphasized the importance of expanding nursing education capacity in public hospitals.
