SMIU's Senate meeting held

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Apr, 2026) The 9th Senate meeting of Sindh Madressatul islam University (SMIU) was held here at the Senate Hall of the university on Wednesday. The provincial minister for Universities and Boards, Muhammad Ismail Rahoo, who is also pro-chancellor of provincial universities, presided over the meeting. Dr Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor of SMIU, Muhammad Abbas Baloch, Secretary Universities and Boards Department, Dr Tauha Hussain Ali , Vice Chancellor of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology and other members attended the meeting.

The Senate approved minutes of the last meeting of the Syndicate and other statutory bodies of the university. The meeting also approved the annual budget for fiscal year 2026-27. Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai informed the Senate that despite inflation and increased expenditure, the SMIU has balanced its budget, and there is no financial deficit at the university.

The Senate nominated Dr Inayat Magsi, Assistant Professor at SMIU, as a member of the Finance and Planning Committee of the university for the period of two years.

Talking in the meeting, Muhammad Ismail Rahoo appreciated the efforts of Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai for bringing financial stability to the university and termed it an example for other universities. He said that it was a good sign that SMIU is improving its financial matters every year, resulting in improvement in the academic as well as administrative performance of the university.

Offering full government support to SMIU, the provincial minister said that Sindh Madressatul Islam University is a historic institution of the country. Also being the alma mater of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, it is the responsibility of all people of Pakistan that we must support it as it could get more successes in the future.

Muhammad Ismail Rahoo presented a tribute to the founder of Sindh Madressatul Islam, Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi, and said Sindh Madressatul Islam is an example of his vision and commitment to the people of this region, established in the end of the 19th century. He said that other universities of the province must decrease their unnecessary expenditures and pay heed to quality education and student-centered activities.

Dr Mujeeb Sahrai in his remarks highlighted the achievements of the university, including holding the 6th Convocation of the university on 17th July 2025, where the first PhD produced by SMIU was awarded a degree. While refereeing the 3rd Global Research Congress (GRC) held in December 2025, the vice chancellor appreciated the efforts of all employees of SMIU, especially the faculty, that had played a significant role in planning and successfully executing the proceedings of GRC along with five international conferences and one national conference.

The Annual Report of the SMIU was also presented in the Senate, and for that the efforts of the teams of QEC and the PR Department were lauded.

The Senate also unanimously passed a resolution and appreciated the nomination of SMIU’s Vice Chancellor Dr Mujeeb Sahrai for the prestigious presidential award “Sitara-i-Imtiaz.” The resolution, which was presented by Dean of SMIU Dr Jamshed Adil Halepoto, lauded the sincere efforts of the vice chancellor for brining financial stability in SMIU.
