MULTAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th May, 2026) Punjab Transport Authority Monday opened South Punjab’s first modern vehicle inspection and certification center in Multan, marking a significant step toward reducing environmental pollution and improving road safety across the region.
The computerized and automated system facility was inaugurated by Secretary PTA Hassan Ahsan. Speaking on the occasion, he said the initiative reflects the Punjab government's commitment to environmental protection and smog control.
Hassan Ahsan said, vehicles would undergo fully computerized inspections at the new facility before being issued fitness certificates, adding that the automated system would minimize human intervention and ensure transparency in the inspection process.
He said, the law now binds fitness certificates mandatory not only for commercial vehicles but also for private vehicles, particularly motorcycles, in an effort to curb rising air pollution.
He said, government plans to introduce the system in all major districts of Punjab by June 30, adding that licenses being issued for additional centers.
Citing a study conducted with the support of the World Bank, Hassan Ahsan said nearly 40 percent of air pollution is caused by the transport sector, necessitating scientific and technology-driven measures to address the issue. He said, the old route permit system introduced in 1965 has also been digitized, and applications for new inspection centers are now being received through an online portal.
The PTA secretary said, awareness seminars would be organized to educate the public before strict enforcement of the law.
It was announced that more inspection centers would be established in Bahawalpur, Lodhran, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha and Faisalabad with the support of the Punjab government.
Among others present at the event were Assistant Commissioner Mian Amjad, Secretary RTA Mohsin Ghafoor and CTO Traffic Police DSP Muhammad Abdullah.
