Special Assistant directs security, justice reforms during first visit to KP Home Dept

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 2nd Jun, 2026) Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Home and Tribal Affairs Tariq Saeed on Tuesday directed authorities to strengthen counterterrorism measures, improve the criminal justice system, and accelerate reforms in prisons and probation services during his first official visit to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Home Department.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the department, Tariq Saeed received a comprehensive briefing on the province’s security situation, administrative affairs, and ongoing initiatives aimed at maintaining law and order.

Senior officials informed the meeting about prevailing security challenges and steps being taken to counter terrorism, particularly in southern districts and the newly merged tribal areas.

Expressing concern over recent incidents of violence, the Special Assistant stressed the need for enhanced coordination and effective measures to ensure public safety and lasting peace.

Highlighting the importance of modernizing the justice system, he instructed officials to prepare a proposal for establishing a Medico-Legal Directorate within the Home Department to strengthen forensic and legal support mechanisms.

The meeting was also informed about the high proportion of undertrial prisoners in provincial jails.

Tariq Saeed directed the department to engage with relevant judicial authorities and formulate recommendations aimed at reducing delays in the disposal of cases and improving prison management.

Reviewing the ongoing repatriation of Afghan refugees, he emphasized that the process should be carried out in accordance with legal requirements and humanitarian principles, ensuring dignity and facilitation for those returning to their homeland.

The Special Assistant further called for reforms to strengthen the probation system in line with international best practices, describing it as an important component of rehabilitation and criminal justice reforms.

He also directed officials to ensure effective implementation of recent court decisions and reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to enhancing institutional performance, strengthening the rule of law, and improving public service delivery.

Senior officials of the Home Department, including Additional Chief Secretary Home Akramullah and other departmental heads, attended the meeting.
