SWAT, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Jun, 2026) As rain clouds rolled over the emerald mountains of Swat on Friday afternoon, tourists took shelter after another spell of pre-monsoon showers turning weather pleasant.
Moments later, the skies cleared, sunlight streamed through the mist, and a brilliant rainbow stretched across the valley, turning Kalam into what visitors described as a living postcard.
The breathtaking spectacle came after heavy pre-monsoon rains swept through the picturesque valleys of Kalam, Bahrain, Madain, Malam Jabba, Mahudhand and Osho, washing the forests, meadows and mountain slopes in fresh shades of green while patches of lingering snow sparkled under the returning sunshine.
For thousands of tourists arriving ahead of the weekend, the dramatic change in weather transformed an ordinary visit into an unforgettable experience.
Families poured into Upper Swat after the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast widespread rainfall, eager to witness nature at its finest.
Children played in the drizzle, couples posed beneath colourful umbrellas and visitors lined scenic viewpoints to capture the fleeting rainbow arching across the valley.
"It felt like walking inside a painting," said Azhar Khan, a tourist from Peshawar. "The rainbow, mist and mountains forced me to keep taking photographs and sharing them with my family and friends."
Beyond its visual beauty, the changing weather has breathed new life into the local tourism economy.
Along Kalam's winding mountain trails, the rhythmic clip-clop of horses echoed through the valleys as riders guided visitors towards the breathtaking Mahudhand Lake and Osho Valley.
For many horse owners, whose livelihoods depend on tourism, the rain-sunshine combination has unexpectedly turned into a blessing.
"When the sun appears after rain and a rainbow forms over the mountains, everything begins to shine," said local guide Samad Yousafzai.
"Tourists feel as though they are riding through a dream." Horse rides through damp deodar forests have become one of the season's biggest attractions.
The scent of rain-soaked earth, cool mountain breeze and cloud-covered peaks offer visitors an experience that photographs alone cannot capture.
Those photographs, however, have become equally valuable.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Local photographers have found themselves busier than ever as tourists seek professionally captured memories against misty forests, snow-dusted peaks and colourful rainbows.
"People want something unique," said photographer Haseeb Ali while adjusting his camera near a popular viewpoint at Manglawar Swat. "A family portrait with horses, mist and sunlight breaking through the clouds is something they cannot find anywhere else."
With social media amplifying Swat's stunning landscapes, visitors are eager to share cinematic images online, further boosting demand for local photography services.
The influx of tourists from Punjab and across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also revitalised hotels, restaurants, transport operators and roadside businesses.
"I came with my family to enjoy Kalam's natural beauty and taste its famous brown trout," said Misal Khan from Nowshera.
"The Swat Motorway has made travel much easier, though the second phase of the motorway should be completed soon to further facilitate tourists."
Adventure seekers have also found plenty to enjoy. While skiers continue to visit Malam Jabba, thrill-seekers head towards Mahudhand Lake for boating, trekking and paragliding amid cool mountain breezes and drifting clouds.
Hotels and guesthouses in Upper Kalam are operating at near full capacity, with many visitors struggling to secure accommodation during the weekend rush.
Tourism officials acknowledged that the growing number of visitors reflects Swat's rising popularity as one of Pakistan's premier travel destinations.
The renewed tourist activity is creating employment opportunities for guides, photographers, transporters, hotel workers and small business owners whose incomes depend heavily on the summer season.
As evening descended and the rainbow slowly faded into the clouds, tourists lingered a little longer, reluctant to leave the enchanting landscape behind.
For visitors, it was a magical encounter with nature. For the people of Swat, it was another reminder that every spell of rain followed by sunshine not only paints the valley in spectacular colours but also brings renewed hope, livelihoods and smiles to a community whose future is closely tied to tourism.
