Sustainable peace not possible without free media: Hashmi

KARACHI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd May, 2026) Governor of Sindh, Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, in his special message on World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, stated that the 2026 theme, “Shaping the Future at Peace,” underscored the importance of promoting a free, independent, and responsible media, as sustainable peace cannot be achieved without it.

He said that journalism was the fourth pillar of the state and played a vital role in strengthening democracy, adding that freedom of expression and a free press were essential for the survival and stability of a democratic system.

The Governor Sindh further remarked that the media served as a strong bridge of trust between the state and the public, while ensuring the protection of journalists’ rights and providing them with a conducive working environment was a fundamental responsibility of the state.

He emphasized that constructive and responsible journalism played a key role in national development, stability and unity. He added that without press freedom, transparency, accountability and social justice could not be ensured.

Muhammad Nehal Hashmi called for renewed commitment to promoting free, responsible and positive journalism.
