LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Jun, 2026) The University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, has officially notified the implementation of the Five-Year Modular Integrated BDS Curriculum (BDS Integrated Curriculum 2K25 Version 2.0) for all constituent and affiliated public and private dental colleges across Punjab, marking a significant reform in undergraduate dental education.

According to the official notification, the revised curriculum will be applicable to all students admitted to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme from the Academic Session 2025–2026 onward. Affiliated institutions have been directed to implement the curriculum in its entirety while ensuring compliance with the university's monitoring and quality assurance framework.

The new curriculum adopts a modular integrated teaching model, replacing the traditional discipline-based approach with an interdisciplinary framework designed to improve clinical reasoning and patient-centred learning. It also stresses early clinical exposure, allowing students to interact with patients and clinical environments from the initial years of training rather than waiting until senior classes.

The curriculum is built around competency-based education, focusing on measurable clinical skills, communication, professionalism, ethics, patient safety, research methodology and community-based learning. Students will also undergo a broader range of assessments, including Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPE), Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), workplace-based assessments, portfolios and logbooks, alongside conventional examinations.

The revised framework is the second version of the BDS Integrated Curriculum developed by UHS following consultation with dental education experts and stakeholders. According to the curriculum's foreword, Version 2.0 incorporates feedback from the initial rollout and aligns dental education in Punjab with contemporary international standards and evidence-based educational practices.

The curriculum was formally launched by UHS earlier as part of the university's broader reforms in undergraduate medical and dental education, alongside the updated MBBS Modular Integrated Curriculum. The initiative aims to standardise teaching and assessment across public and private institutions affiliated with UHS throughout Punjab.

According to the announcement, the aim of this change is to improve the global acceptance of Pakistani dental graduates’ degrees and provide them with more opportunities for employment and higher education abroad.

Moreover, a proposal for a bridging programme or top-up year has also been considered for graduates who have already completed a 4-year BDS so that they can obtain a 5-year equivalent degree.

According to UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the 5-year BDS program will make preparation for international licensing exams more effective, while harmonizing dental education with global standards is the need of the hour. He said that this is not just an addition of one year, but a fundamental reform in dental education.
