The Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, officially commanded all army units to stand down today after a U.S. brokered ceasefire. While a two-week truce is now in effect, Tehran’s message remains defiant. Khamenei clarified that this pause is a strategic decision and “not the end of the war.” As the forces of both countries remain on high alert, the region has grown vigilant with Islamabad as the epicenter of the whole negotiation whose stakes are quite high and whose outcome will be known in deciding on whether the region will be peaceful or not.

Through a televised speech delivered by the state broadcaster IRIB, Mojtaba Khamenei instructed all the arms of the military to promptly obey the ceasefire. But the Supreme National Security Council soon moderated dreams of an enduring peace. The military leaders underlined the fact that the hands are waving on the gun and that any small slip of any kind by the enemy is dealt with off-hand with an instant counter-measures.

This ceasefire has been negotiated by Iranian officials as an act of enemy retreat and not a compromise. To Tehran, the outcome of the next round of the political discussions will determine whether the war is over or there is a fresh wave of war.

The foreign policy is now directed towards Pakistan. On April 10, direct talks are to be initiated between the U.S. and Iranian envoys in Islamabad. The negotiations, which are to last two weeks, will seek a point of agreement between the 10-point proposal of Iran and the U.S. military goals.

On the basis of negotiations with the leadership of Pakistan, U.S. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire. Trump indicated that the U.S has met its major objectives of the military, and concluded that a long-term accord has a workable base. But the truce is conditional. The first demand of the ceasefire to be viable is the daily and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz which is a crucial energy route around the world.
