Although the resolution does not require presidential approval and is not legally binding, its passage reflects growing concern among lawmakers over the conflict
WASHINGTON: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-June 24th, 2026) The US Senate on Tuesday approved a resolution urging an end to military hostilities with Iran, marking a significant challenge to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict and ongoing diplomatic efforts with Tehran.
The measure, which had already been passed by the House of Representatives, was approved in the Senate by a vote of 50-48. It calls on the president to withdraw US forces from military operations involving Iran unless Congress formally authorises the use of force.
Although the resolution does not require presidential approval and is not legally binding, its passage reflects growing concern among lawmakers over the conflict and the administration’s approach to military engagement in the region.
The vote comes as the Trump administration seeks to transform a preliminary understanding with Iran into a broader agreement covering issues including Tehran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer pushed for the vote, arguing that Congress should assert its constitutional authority over decisions related to war and military action.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>Speaking on the Senate floor before the vote, Schumer urged lawmakers to take a public position on the conflict, saying congressional action was necessary to ensure a lasting end to hostilities.
The resolution previously cleared the Republican-controlled House with support from all Democratic members and a small number of Republicans, highlighting rare bipartisan disagreement with the president on national security matters.
Democratic lawmakers contend that military operations against Iran were launched without the approval required under the US Constitution. Supporters of the resolution argue that Congress must play a central role in decisions involving armed conflict.
Meanwhile, the opponents of the measure maintain that restricting presidential authority during sensitive diplomatic negotiations could undermine US interests and complicate efforts to achieve a long-term settlement with Iran.
