United States Department of State says the move reflects its commitment to ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel while improving resource management

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 6th, 2026) The United States Department of State on Wednesday announced a phased closure of its Consulate General in Peshawar, citing security considerations and operational efficiency.

In an official statement, the department said the move reflects its commitment to ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel while improving resource management.

The announcement underscores a shift in operational strategy rather than a change in diplomatic priorities, with the United States reiterating its commitment to maintaining robust relations with Pakistan.

Following the closure, diplomatic engagement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be handled by the US Embassy in Islamabad.

Despite the decision, Washington подчеркнул that its policy priorities in Pakistan remain unchanged.

The statement noted that while the physical presence in Peshawar is being reduced, the United States will continue to maintain strong engagement with the province.

The department reaffirmed its intent to work closely with local officials and communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to promote economic cooperation, enhance regional security, and advance mutual interests.

It further stated that diplomatic operations in Pakistan will continue through its remaining missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. The US Mission to Pakistan will remain actively involved in strengthening bilateral ties and pursuing shared objectives.
