ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 1st May, 2026) Vice Chancellor of the Federal urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Prof. Zabta Khan Shinwari, on Friday paid tribute to labour for their invaluable contributions to the country’s economy and society, calling for stronger labour policies to ensure worker's dignity.
In a message on the occasion of International "Labour Day", he said hard work of labourers form the backbone of national development, adding that the day serves not only as recognition of their role but also as a reminder to strengthen policy commitments ensuring safety and equal opportunities for all workers.
Prof. Shinwari emphasized that sustainable development and national progress are closely linked with the well-being of workers across both formal and informal sectors.
He noted that industrial labourers, agricultural workers, skilled professionals, and daily wage earners all play a critical role in driving economic growth and maintaining social stability.
The Vice Chancellor called for expanding social protection measures, including pensions, health insurance, and unemployment support, particularly for workers in the informal sector.
He further emphasized the importance of skills development, digital literacy, and continuous training to prepare the workforce for emerging economic challenges and opportunities.
Addressing gender equality and inclusion, Prof. Shinwari said labour policies must ensure equal opportunities, safe working environments for women, and protection for marginalized and vulnerable groups.
He also highlighted the need to strengthen labour rights by ensuring access to grievance redressal mechanisms, collective bargaining, and worker representation in decision-making processes.
Prof. Shinwari stressed that achieving these objectives requires coordinated efforts among government institutions, employers, academia, civil society, and international partners.
He noted that universities and research institutions have a vital role in providing evidence-based policy recommendations and promoting inclusive and ethical economic practices.
Reaffirming the university’s commitment, he reiterated efforts would continue to build a just, inclusive, and resilient labour system where every worker is respected, protected, and empowered. He added that the dignity of labour must remain central to national priorities, concluding that a nation’s true strength lies in the dignity of its labour.
