Karachi: The Pakistan Navy has honored its elite Special Service Group Navy (SSG-N) commandos in a rare underwater badge ceremony, marking the completion of one of the most physically and mentally demanding military training programs.

The all-underwater ceremony officially welcomed the newly-minted commandos into the elite group. This unconventional ceremony is a testament to the harsh environment in which the SSG-N commandos operate.

Sources close to the program indicated the ceremony is intended to represent the passage from student to fully-trained operative, and to emphasise the importance of stamina, discipline and concentration in stressful situations.

The SSG-N course is considered one of the most physically demanding in the world. Over the course of months, candidates participate in deepwater diving, combat training, survival training and long-duration, demanding endurance training. Few candidates successfully pass the course.

These commandos are equipped to perform sea, coastal and underwater operations where they must make and act on quick decisions in dangerous situations.

The Special Service Group Navy is vital for the defence of Pakistan’s coasts, according to military sources. Their duties include counter-terrorism, reconnaissance in sensitive areas and underwater missions.

The badge ceremony not only marks the completion of a rigorous journey but also recognizes the commitment and resilience of those who qualify. Officials noted that such highly trained personnel significantly enhance the operational readiness of the navy.
