MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Apr, 2026) World Water and Gender Week 2026 was inaugurated at the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) under the theme “Water and Gender,” with collaboration from the food and Agriculture Organization and Farmers Development Organization.
The opening ceremony was held at the Gillani Law College auditorium and attended by a large number of representatives from government departments, civil society, academia, and students.
Officials from the Agriculture, Irrigation, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Social Welfare departments, along with agricultural research institutions and universities, participated in the event.
The speakers highlighted that declining water availability in Pakistan is increasing the burden on women, particularly in rural & deserted areas where they play a key role in water collection, agriculture, and household management. They stressed that women’s inclusion is essential for effective water management and sustainable development.
Dean Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Prof Dr Nazim Hussain welcomed participants and termed the initiative a step towards stronger institutional collaboration. FAO representative Engr Muhammad Mudassar Maqsood underscored the importance of joint observance of global events, while FDO CEO Ghulam Mustafa emphasized the role of women in water conservation.
A panel discussion focused on gender-responsive policies, improved water governance, and climate-resilient practices. Experts agreed that empowering women can enhance agricultural productivity and community resilience.
The event concluded with an awareness walk joined by students, faculty, officials, and civil society members, reaffirming commitment to water conservation and gender equality.
Activities of the week will continue till April 10, including community engagements, training sessions, a poster competition, and a closing ceremony.
