ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 8th May, 2026) The Sensitive price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation increased by 0.79 percent during the week ended on May 07, 2026, for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Friday.

According to PBS data, SPI for the week under review rose to 357.04 points as compared to 354.23 points recorded in the previous week. On a year-on-year basis, the SPI increased by 15.16 percent.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16 = 100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

The SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 0.69 percent to 334.45 points from 332.16 points.

The SPI for consumption groups of Rs 17,733–22,888; Rs 22,889–29,517; Rs 29,518–44,175; and above Rs 44,175 increased by 0.77 percent, 0.76 percent, 0.83 percent and 0.80 percent, respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 items (43.14 percent) increased, 14 items (27.45 percent) decreased, while 15 items (29.41 percent) remained stable.

A major increase was observed in the prices of chicken, which rose by 12.82 percent, followed by diesel by 5.10 percent, wheat flour 3.

42 percent, petrol 1.66 percent, curd 1.63 percent, fresh milk 1.33 percent, beef 0.65 percent, tea prepared 0.53 percent, mutton 0.50 percent, potatoes 0.48 percent, washing soap 0.12 percent and cigarettes by 0.08 percent.

On the other hand, prices of tomatoes declined by 7.08 percent, garlic 1.91 percent, eggs 1.22 percent, LPG 1.08 percent, pulse masoor 0.43 percent, onions 0.38 percent, pulse gram 0.36 percent, rice IRRI-6/9 0.30 percent and gur 0.19 percent.

On a year-on-year basis, the SPI for the week under review increased by 15.16 percent compared to the corresponding week of last year. During the period, a major increase was recorded in the prices of petrol by 58.32 percent, diesel 55.76 percent, electricity charges for Q1 52.58 percent, wheat flour 50.65 percent, LPG 48.82 percent and onions 41.97 percent. Prices of mutton, chili powder, garlic, beef, powdered milk and bananas also increased.

Meanwhile, prices of potatoes declined by 44.58 percent, pulse gram by 20.29 percent, sugar by 13.76 percent, salt powder by 13.26 percent, pulse masoor by 11.74 percent, eggs by 7.88 percent, chicken by 1.80 percent and pulse moong by 1.60 percent over the same period of last year, PBS reported.
