WASHINGTON: Authorities have identified the suspect arrested in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, according to law enforcement officials.
Investigators said Allen is believed to have been present at the Washington Hilton Hotel as a guest when the annual event was taking place. The case is currently under active investigation and officials have confirmed that no motive has yet been established.
The District of Columbia Police Department stated that multiple investigative teams are reviewing the suspect’s background, movements and possible intent prior to the incident. Authorities have not ruled out any angle as inquiries continue.
According to publicly available professional and academic records linked to his name, Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
He later completed a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
His professional profile describes him as a trained mechanical engineer and computer scientist who has worked across multiple fields, including education and independent development. He has reportedly been associated with C2 Education, a private tutoring and academic support organization, where he worked as a part-time instructor.
Before that he served as a teaching assistant at Caltech and later worked as a mechanical engineer at IJK Controls in South Pasadena. His profile also references involvement in a robotics competition during his time at Caltech in 2016, where his team reportedly achieved success.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed that the suspect was armed with a shotgun and opened fire at a Secret Service agent outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel during the event.
The dinner was attended by President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior government officials.
Security personnel responded immediately to the incident and successfully took the suspect into custody at the scene. Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
