ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Jun, 2026) NDMA representative Waseem Ahmad on World Environment Day stressed collective action by institutions and society is vital for urgent preventive measures, warning of rising pollution, climate change impacts, glacier melt and urging tree plantation, wetland protection, improved housing planning and public participation.
NDMA representative Waseem Ahmad, in an exclusive interview with ptv news on World Environment Day, explained the practical grounds of climate change, highlighting the real-time experiences and visible impacts being felt across the country, including rising temperatures, changing weather patterns and environmental stress.
He said climate change is no longer a distant threat but a present reality, warning that its effects are intensifying due to pollution, deforestation and loss of natural ecosystems.
He stressed that immediate and coordinated action is required to reduce risks and protect vulnerable communities.
Waseem Ahmad called for joint efforts by institutions and the public to protect the environment, emphasizing tree plantation, ending deforestation, conserving wetlands, promoting home-based agriculture and adopting nature-based solutions as key steps toward long-term environmental stability.
In response to a query, NDMA representative Waseem Ahmad said the authority has significantly upgraded its systems by using state-of-the-art scientific technology for early warning alerts.
He said modern monitoring tools are being used to identify high-risk areas in advance, enabling timely warnings and improved disaster preparedness across vulnerable regions.
<?php /*?> <?php */?>He further said NDMA is working closely with expert teams and relevant departments, with strong coordination with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, SIndh, Balochistan and other regions, particularly on issues such as glacier melt, environmental risks and climate impacts.
He added that initiatives like tree plantation drives, capacity-building trainings and improved response tools are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience and reduce disaster risks.
He said many housing societies are not following proper development planning, which is increasing environmental pressure and urban risks. He stressed the need for better land-use planning, regulated construction practices and incorporation of green spaces in urban layouts.
He further suggested promoting greenery around homes through kitchen gardening and home-based vegetable cultivation, saying such practices can improve food security, support sustainable living, and help restore environmental balance at the household level.
He concluded that nature-based solutions and greenery revival are essential for long-term environmental protection and climate resilience. He reiterated that tree plantation, wetland conservation and sustainable living practices must be widely adopted to reduce growing environmental risks.
The NDMA urged the public to stay updated through its official mobile application “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” and directed provincial and district authorities to remain on high alert, ensuring timely response and effective coordination during any emerging climate or disaster situation.
