MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Apr, 2026) Health experts urged the public to adopt a healthy lifestyle, warning that prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity are major contributors to a wide range of diseases.

Former vice chancellor of Nishtar Medical University Dr Rana Altaf Ahmed, talking to APP on Tuesday highlighted the serious health risks associated with continuous sitting. He said that individuals who remain seated for four or more hours daily are more likely to develop conditions such as Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, heart ailments, and even Stroke.

He emphasized that people with sedentary lifestyles, particularly those engaged in desk jobs, are at greater risk compared to those who remain physically active. “A large number of diseases today are linked to prolonged chair sitting,” he noted, adding that such inactivity increases the level of Cortisol in the body, which can lead to multiple health complications.

Chief Executive Officer of Mukhtiar A Sheikh Hospital (MASH) also underscored the importance of preventive healthcare. He remarked that prevention is always better than cure and stressed the need for a balanced diet, regular exercise, and at least 30 minutes of daily walking to maintain good health.

Dr Rana Altaf further pointed out that breathing in a pollution-free environment significantly contributes to overall well-being. He cautioned the public against self-medication and urged individuals to pay attention to early warning signs of diseases, noting that awareness and timely action can help prevent serious complications.

A noted anesthesiologist also advised people to undergo annual medical check-ups, regardless of whether they feel healthy or suffer from any condition, to ensure early diagnosis and a better quality of life. He reiterated that a daily 30-minute walk should become a routine practice for everyone.

He warned against the unnecessary use of painkillers, advising instead to consult a qualified physician for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Health experts concluded that adopting a proactive approach toward health—through physical activity, regular testing, and medical consultation—can lead to a longer, healthier, and more peaceful life.
