BAHAWALPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Apr, 2026) Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza on Monday reviewed the establishment
of handcart (rehri) zones, provision of customized carts, and the development of
organized rehri bazaars.
Officials concerned briefed the meeting on the progress of initiative.
Addressing the participants, the Deputy Commissioner directed that the handcart
project be completed at the earliest to ensure improved facilities for citizens.
He noted that the initiative would not only promote commercial activity in the city
but also create dignified livelihood opportunities for small-scale vendors.
During the briefing, officials informed that a total of 660 handcarts were required
across various tehsils of the district. The breakdown includes 120 carts for Bahawalpur
City, 25 for Bahawalpur Saddar, 130 for Ahmadpur East, 170 for Yazman, 65 for Khairpur
Tamewali, and 150 for Hasilpur. It was further shared that 86 customized handcarts
had been proposed.
Of these, 30 were designated for the Craft Bazaar and 25 for the
Melaywali Gali (near Hussaini Chowk), while the distribution of 31 carts was currently
underway. So far, a total of 55 handcarts have already been distributed.
The meeting was also informed that organized markets had been established in the
Craft Bazaar and Mela Gali using modern-style handcarts, providing citizens with a more
structured and improved shopping experience. In addition, locations have been identified
for the establishment of Sahulat Bazaars (facilitation markets). One unit had already been
set up in One Unit Staff Colony, while preparations for launching operations in Bahawalpur’s
commercial area had been completed.
Deputy Commissioner Syed Hassan Raza instructed the departments concerned to further
accelerate progress on the project and ensure that all measures were implemented with
transparency and merit, so that public relief could be delivered at the earliest.
