Agri dept advises pruning, controlled spraying to combat mango hopper infestation

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Mar, 2026) Mango hopper is a dangerous insect that causes significant damage to plants and to control it, orchard owners should prune trees to improve sunlight exposure and air circulation.

A spokesman for the Punjab Agriculture Department said on Monday that, to control mango hopper, farmers should avoid the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers and over-irrigation.

He said, “Spraying tree trunks during summer afternoons, in consultation with local experts from the Punjab Agriculture Department, is effective in controlling the pest.” Before completely spraying the plants, farmers should first spray the inner branches and then the outer ones, he added.

The spokesman said that desired results cannot be achieved without spraying the trunks and thick branches of mango trees. In case of severe infestation, farmers should repeat the spray at intervals of five days, he mentioned.
