MULTAN, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Apr, 2026) The Punjab Agriculture department issued an advisory for farmers to protect cotton crops during ongoing unseasonal rains.
According to the department’s spokesperson, farmers have been urged to prevent water from accumulating in the agriculture fields, as stagnant water disrupts root respiration and nutrient formation in young plants. This can lead to the shedding of buds and small bolls, ultimately reducing yield.
The advisory warned that stagnant water in fields for more than 48 hours can cause plants to wilt.
Farmers have been directed to ensure immediate drainage or divert excess water to lower, vacant fields.
In cases where drainage is not feasible, growers have been advised to dig pits along field edges, measuring approximately 10 feet in length, 6 feet in width, and 5 feet in depth, to collect rainwater.
Farmers who are sowing cotton have also been urged to monitor weather forecasts via radio and television and temporarily halt sowing during rainfall to avoid losses.
