MIRPUR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Mar, 2026) In a significant development, the Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has formally initiated preparations for the upcoming General Elections-2026, with the schedule expected to be announced in May this year. According to official sources, the first high-level consultative meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal on Monday, was held in the Federal capital with participation from key political stakeholders.
The meeting, attended by heads of various political parties and members of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, including representatives of Jammu and Kashmir refugees, focused on ensuring transparent, fair, and orderly elections. Moreover, the Chief Election Commissioner clearly reaffirmed that the elections would be conducted on time, while emphasizing that all necessary arrangements are being made to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Highlighting operational aspects, officials said the polls are planned to be held under the supervision of the Pakistan Army, while discussions also covered comprehensive preparations, including the updating of voter lists and provision of adequate facilities at polling stations. Furthermore, special measures were considered to facilitate voters from refugee communities to ensure their smooth participation.
Meanwhile, Member Election Commission Syed Nazir Hussain Gilani informed participants that the electoral system has been fully digitized and linked with the database of NADRA. Consequently, political parties presented their proposals regarding voter lists and security, and both sides agreed to continue constructive consultations to further strengthen the electoral framework.
