AJK squad of special athletes leaves for Islamabad to participate in National Special Olympics

MIRPUR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th May, 2026) A squad of special athletes from Azad Jammu and Kashmir left for Islamabad on Wednesday to participate in the National Special Olympics commencing from May 14.

Commissioner Mirpur Division Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan and Deputy Commissioner Mirpur Sajid Aslam Chaudhry saw off the special children belonging to the Kashmir Institute of Special Education (KISE), a local institution working for rehabilitation and education of special children, particularly hearing-impaired students.

The four-day National Special Olympics 2026 will be held in Islamabad from May 14 to May 17.

According to officials, the opening ceremony of the mega sporting event, organized by Special Olympics Pakistan, will take place at the Jinnah sports Complex in Islamabad on Thursday evening.

Special athletes from all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to participate in the games.

Director KISE Dr. Amjad Ansari said athletes from his institution would compete in 100-metre and 200-metre races, long jump and relay events in the first phase of the competition.

He added that KISE players would also participate in powerlifting and cycling events during the second phase of the games.

Parents and teachers bid farewell to the athletes and extended their best wishes for success in the competitions.

Speaking on the occasion, Raja Tahir Mumtaz Khan and Sajid Aslam Chaudhry praised the determination, courage and sporting spirit of the special athletes.

Dr. Amjad Ansari said the players of KISE had already earned recognition for Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan at both national and international levels through their performances.

The closing ceremony of the National Special Olympics 2026 is scheduled to be held on May 17 in Islamabad.
