WAH CANTT, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Apr, 2026) Archaeologists have discovered a collection of ancient glass beads at Taxila, offering fresh insights into early craftsmanship and trade networks of the Gandhara civilization. The artifacts, dating from the early 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD, were uncovered during recent excavations.
Officials from the Punjab Department of Archeology confirmed that 18 glass beads were found at Bhir Mound, one of the earliest settlements of the Gandhara era. The beads were recovered at a shallow depth and are believed to have originally formed part of a necklace, with the thread having decayed over time.
Deputy Director Muhammad Aasim Dogar stated that preliminary analysis links the artifacts to the late Mauryan period and the early Greek period in Taxila, reflecting cultural and artistic influences of the time. Experts noted that the craftsmanship demonstrates a high level of skill in glass-making techniques.
The discovery further underscores Taxila’s historical importance as a thriving hub of trade and cultural exchange. Archaeologists believe such artifacts indicate extensive commercial links with Central Asia and the wider subcontinent, highlighting the region’s role in ancient economic and cultural networks.
