At UN, cricket icon Shahid Afridi discusses peace and humanitarian work with Pakistan’s envoy

UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Jun, 2026) Pakistani cricket legend Shahid Afridi visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday at the invitation of Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

The two discussed sports diplomacy, development initiatives, and Afridi’s ongoing humanitarian work through the Shahid Afridi Foundation, according to a press release issued by Pakistan Mission to the UN.

Ambassador Asim Ahmad, himself a cricket fan, welcomed Afridi to the UN, praising his outstanding contributions to global cricket and the joy he has brought to millions of fans.

Both figures highlighted how sports can serve as an effective, unifying platform to foster peace, goodwill, and international cooperation.

Ambassador Asim Ahmad commended Afridi's welfare initiatives, noting the positive impact of his foundation's work in underserved communities.

Afridi expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador and the Permanent Mission of Pakistan for their hospitality. He shared his pride in seeing Pakistan represented on the global stage and used the opportunity to discuss further strengthening Pakistan's positive influence worldwide.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN and the officers of the Pakistan Mission, were also present on the occasion.

Ambassador Asim Ahmad also hosted a dinner in Afridi's honour.
