PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 31st Mar, 2026) In a move to protect the environment, the Deputy Commissioner of Lower Chitral has imposed a complete ban on the use, sale and transportation of plastic bags in the Kalash Valleys.
According to an official notification, plastic bags pose serious environmental hazards as they are non-biodegradable materials. These bags not only contribute to pollution but also block waterways and disrupt natural ecosystems.
The statement further highlighted that the improper use of plastic bags leads to piles of waste in public places, pollution at tourist destinations, degradation of water resources and threats to both human and animal health.
The Kalash Valleys, known for their ecological sensitivity and cultural importance, attract both domestic and international tourists.
Authorities emphasized that environmental degradation in the region could negatively impact tourism, local livelihoods and the natural balance of the area.
Officials also noted that a large influx of tourists is expected during the Kalash Spring Festival, Chilam Joshi, scheduled for May 2026. This increase in visitors raises concerns about higher plastic usage and environmental pollution.
In this context, the decision to impose the ban was made on the recommendation of the Kalash Valleys Development Authority. The ban will remain in effect for 60 days, with the possibility of extension or modification if needed.
Authorities warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators under Section 188 of the law.
