Chairman Senate pays tribute to Bhutto on 47th death anniversary

RAWALPINDI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Apr, 2026) Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani paid tribute to Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto on his 47th death anniversary, calling his political, social, and national contributions unforgettable and describing him as a shining symbol of democracy, ideology, and people’s empowerment.

He was addressing a seminar organized by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Rawalpindi City at the Rawalpindi Arts Council.

Gilani said April 4 is a painful day in national history, reminding the nation of the sacrifices made for democracy and the rights of the people. He highlighted that the 1973 Constitution was a historic achievement of Bhutto, providing a strong foundation for Pakistan’s democratic structure.

He noted that the creation of the Senate reflected Bhutto’s Federal vision, giving provinces equal representation and reducing feelings of deprivation.

He added that the 18th Constitutional Amendment further strengthened democracy by empowering the provinces. Gilani also praised Bhutto for raising Pakistan’s international stature, giving the nation a clear identity, and empowering citizens through the right to vote while safeguarding fundamental rights. He recalled Bhutto’s role in laying the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear program and establishing major industrial projects such as Pakistan Steel Mills, which strengthened national defense and created jobs.

The Senate Chairman said Shaheed Benazir Bhutto continued her father’s mission, while Asif Ali Zardari strengthened Parliament through the 18th Amendment. He added that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari represents the youth, and with a large young population, Pakistan has a bright future.

Former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, in his address, said he had seen Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as a brave and people-friendly leader. He said Bhutto gave power to the common man through the right to vote and laid the foundation of real democracy in Pakistan.

He also praised the role of Benazir Bhutto and said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is continuing the struggle for promotion of democracy. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf urged party workers to stay united and focus on public service.

Other speakers, including Chaudhry Yasin, former MD PBM Amir Fida Paracha, and PPP Rawalpindi City President Mian Khurram Rasool, also paid tribute to Bhutto’s political and public services.

At the end of the seminar, Gilani congratulated Mian Khurram Rasool for organizing the event.
