Chenab embankment project reviewed

GUJRAT, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Jul, 2026) Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on the Chief Minister's Inspection Team Shoaib Mirza visited the proposed Chenab River protective embankment site on Friday to review progress on a flood protection scheme designed to mitigate flood risks in vulnerable riverine areas.

Deputy Commissioner(DC),Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi accompanied him during the visit while officials briefed the delegation on the project's progress and implementation plan.

According to officials, the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management (CCDM) approved the scheme in March 2026.

However,final approval from the provincial cabinet and the release of funds were still awaited.

The project envisages raising the existing protective embankment by four feet and constructing a new 12,000-foot-long embankment along the Chenab River.

Officials said the scheme would benefit around 8,000 residents of Shahbazpur,Changawali,Dhaloon Sharqi, Mehmoodabad,Lala Chak and adjoining villages by protecting them from floodwaters.

It would also help safeguard agricultural land as well as public and private infrastructure from flood-related damage.
