ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd May, 2026) As intense summer heat sweeps across the country and demand for cooling items rises, Tharparkar continues to rely on handmade earthen pots known as matkis, which remain a trusted source of natural cooling and a seasonal necessity, with prices staying normal as locals embrace them as a blessing in the harsh summer.
Locally crafted earthen pots, known as matkis, remain a natural gift in Tharparkar’s intense summer heat, with growing preference driven by their ability to keep water cool throughout the day and night, while buyers commonly test quality by tapping them to hear a sharp, resonant tone that signals sturdiness, said a report with a media channel.
A seller explains that the price of clay pots usually ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 300 depending on size and quality, with the higher-priced ones considered more durable and finely finished.
He adds that the Rs 300 category is mostly preferred by buyers who look for stronger, long-lasting pots that provide better cooling performance during the intense summer heat.
Shopkeepers say demand for earthen pots has increased this season as the intense heat drives more households to prefer traditional cooling methods, with many noting that these handmade matkis remain a practical and affordable solution for daily use.
They add that unlike urban areas where people depend heavily on electricity-based cooling appliances, communities in Tharparkar continue to rely on clay pots for natural relief, calling them an essential part of life during the harsh summer months.
Women buyers say the beauty of these handmade matkis lies in their vibrant colours and traditional designs, adding that they not only keep water naturally cool but also bring a cultural charm into their homes during the harsh summer season.
Another woman notes that using clay pots is part of their family tradition, saying she has seen them since childhood and still prefers them over modern appliances because they feel more natural and connected to heritage.
Two male buyers also appreciate the usefulness of these earthen pots, saying they are simple yet effective in extreme heat, and they continue to choose them as a reliable and affordable way to stay cool during the long summer days.
A worker involved in making clay pots explains that the process is entirely handmade, requiring careful shaping, drying, and firing in traditional kilns to ensure durability and a smooth finish suited for daily use.
He adds that women also play an equal role in this craft, helping in preparation and finishing work, and says demand has been rising this season as more people prefer these traditional pots for natural cooling in the intense
heat.
