HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Apr, 2026) The Commissioner of Hyderabad Division, Fayaz Hussain Abbasi, has said Sindhi language is counted among the oldest languages in the world and keeping this fact in view, all efforts should be made for the language's preservation and promotion.
The Commissioner expressed these views during a visit to the head office of Sindh Language Authority (SLA) here on Thursday. He shared a copy of a notification issued by the then Commissioner of Hyderabad, Bartel Frere, in 1857.
"It was stated in that notification that all the applications and correspondence by the common people to that Commissioner should be addressed in Sindhi language," Abbasi said.
He added that Frere had made it clear that if the applications were not in Sindhi or were not submitted in his office along with Sindhi translations, no response would be made against them. He pointed out that Sindhi was given official language status during the colonial era.
The SLA's Chairman, Dr Sher Mehrani, urged the Commissioner to affix signboards in the government offices written in Sindhi. He emphasized that the government should strictly direct the private schools to teach Sindhi to implement the Sindh Private education Institutions Ordinance, 2001, and Sindh Language Act, 1972. Abbasi visited different parts of the SLA secretariat during his visit.
