Director Agriculture (Extension) Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood has said that early sowing of rice nursery (paddy) is strictly prohibited and the farmers should avoid from cultivation before May 20 as it is an illegal act and punishable offence under the law

FAISALABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Apr, 2026) Director Agriculture (Extension) Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood has said that early sowing of rice nursery (paddy) is strictly prohibited and the farmers should avoid from cultivation before May 20 as it is an illegal act and punishable offence under the law.

Addressing the farmers, he urged them to strictly avoid sowing rice nursery before the deadline and said that premature cultivation could lead to serious agronomic and economic losses.

He said that there are national-level concerns that early sowing not only reduces yield but also promotes the growth of harmful pests including stem borers, which can later devastate the standing crop. He explained that transplanting activities immediately after wheat harvesting and sowing nursery during March or April adversely affect the pollination process. As a result, grain formation remains incomplete, leading to reduced production or even total crop failure in severe cases, he added.

He also highlighted that early sowing significantly increases water consumption, complicates weed control and exposes the crop to higher risks during the monsoon season.

Excess moisture during this period can lead to the development of aflatoxin, posing a serious threat to crop quality and food safety, he added.

He categorically stated that popular rice varieties such as Basmati-1509, Indian-1847, Indian-1692, Diamond-109 and Diamond-123 are not suitable for early sowing under any circumstances.

The farmers should strictly follow the recommended sowing schedule to ensure healthy crop growth and optimum yield, he added.

Referring to legal provisions, he warned that under the Punjab Agriculture Pests Ordinance 1959 and the Punjab Agriculture Pests Rules 1960, early cultivation of rice nursery is a legal violation.

The Government of Punjab reserves the right to take action against the violators, which may include destruction of the crop, he added.

He urged the farmers to comply with official guidelines and avoid unnecessary risks as adherence to recommended dates would help protect crops from potential losses and ensure sustainable agricultural productivity in the province.
